A Letter From Kate

Dear Friends,

We did not shrink from 2020. We charged through each month of a year I would not want to repeat, but which made us stronger. We paused along the way for much-needed reflection invited by a year characterized not only by the number of challenges it brought, but by the range those challenges covered and the opportunities they presented for listening, adapting, and creating.

One decision in March set the tone for the remainder of the year: we opted to extend housing, work, and studio space for our fellows in residence at the time, knowing that we couldn’t ask them to leave in May, and that we had to do what we could to maintain their access to a safe environment, and to minimize turbulence in their lives. That decision – to put fellows at the forefront, and let their needs drive our approach – gave us the frame of mind that carried for the rest of 2020.

In June, we consulted with participating artists and opted to delay the opening of the By The People x Monochrome Collective Art Fair to give room for other important conversations. But when we did launch the virtual fair, it provided more sales for more artists than the inaugural fair did in 2019, driving funds towards working artists across the DMV and giving collectors something new to shine their Zoom cameras on.

In October, the Halcyon Awards gala was replaced by Halcyon Homecoming, the largest of all our virtual events, featuring nearly 50 Halcyon fellows joining from six continents. It was so much more than a fundraiser – it was a celebration, a reunion, a moment of warmth and a chance to show our newest fellows that though COVID-19 meant a different Halcyon experience for them, this is a community they’ll always be a part of. We will look out for them and tell their stories for many years to come.

2021 will be a year for telling those stories, for discovering new ones, and for welcoming the most fellows Halcyon has ever seen in a single year – but I won’t get ahead of myself. Suffice to say: we’re ready for the big and brilliant things that lie ahead.

Stay creative,

Kate Goodall

Social Enterprise

In 2020, the Halcyon Incubator saw its single largest cohort in the history of the program, a feat made possible by a hybrid in-person and virtual model, and necessitated by the challenging environment COVID-19 created for early-stage entrepreneurs. As our fellow community continues to grow, our team works to build funding vehicles to help invest in their success, and this year we launched the Halcyon Angels to do just that, supporting not only Halcyon’s social entrepreneur fellows, but impact-driven businesses from the broader ecosystem.

Incubator Cohort 12 was in the middle of its residency when the pandemic hit and lockdowns began, but channeling true Halcyon nimbleness, they adapted well to finishing their programming virtually, and celebrated their hard work with an online showcase that proved our event programming could hold its own – and even expand its reach – in an online setting. Cohort 13 joined us a few months later, building camaraderie across continents, with fellows in Uganda, Malaysia, Canada, and the U.S.

We also welcomed the 2020 Opportunity Intensive fellows, all of whom are based in or serving DC’s Opportunity Zones. With monthly programming that ran throughout the year, the Opportunity Intensive fellows experienced every twist and turn of 2020 together, participating in two week-long residencies and culminating in a memorable showcase event. The success of this first cohort inspired us to seek funding to expand the Opportunity Intensive, and in September we announced a $1.5 million grant from the Department of Commerce’s Economic Development Administration (EDA) to grow the Opportunity Intensive to two cohorts per year, reaching the greater DMV region starting in 2021.

Investing

In September, the Halcyon Angels closed their first round of investments – a pair of investments totalling $630,000. It was a notable moment not only because of the substantial size of the investments, signaling the angel network’s intentions moving forward, but because of the nature of the investments. The two ventures, Solstice and MajorClarity, represent two very different sectors (renewable energy and edtech), and one (Solstice) has a prior connection to Halcyon while the other does not.

For this new angel network, committed to sector-agnostic investing in the best early-stage impact-driven businesses, these two investments established an intent to make powerful contributions to ventures that meet a high standard for sustainability and scalability, whether they come through Halcyon’s fellowship pipelines or from the broader social enterprise ecosystem. Before the year was out, the Angels invested again, bringing their 2020 total to $745,000.

Meet The Fellows

Arts Lab Background

Arts

In the words of writer Toni Morrison, “This is precisely the time when artists go to work.” And as Arts Lab fellows wrestled with the impact of COVID-19 on the arts community, we offered them space to reflect, to plan, and to work.

Cohort 3 fellows who were wrapping up their residency when lockdowns began were invited to stay, utilizing free housing and studio space into the summer. They finished their fellowship with a fresh take on an end-of-residency capstone project: a virtual exhibition taking place on Instagram, with each fellow taking over the account for three days in July.

In September, six new multidisciplinary artists started their Halcyon journeys, determined to use this time to add their unique voices to a world that was craving newness and beauty, but was also grappling with hard truths. They, too, will have extended studio space as they continue to find their footing in a changing arts ecosystem and, as always, grow and evolve their practice.

By the People

When a full festival wasn’t in the cards for 2020, it challenged us to look at the By The People platform – this extraordinary community art mechanism with the power to engage with partners large and small – and consider what its most essential purpose is, and what its purpose can be moving forward.

For two years in 2018 and 2019, By The People brought free art to every corner of Washington, D.C., presenting established and emerging artists side by side. The 2019 festival included an element that was new, but proved incredibly engaging: a curated art fair that allowed over two dozen artists from the DMV region – some of whom had never sold work before, others of whom had work in museums – to offer their art to the community. It was the perfect element to hold onto for 2020 because we could deploy it virtually, manage it safely, and lift up working artists we knew could use our support.

The By The People x Monochrome Collective Art Fair launched online on July 12 with 119 artists represented and nearly 500 works available for purchase. Add curator “office hours” and a range of virtual artist talk events and without question, the event lived up to By The People’s tradition of bringing experimental, optimistic, free art programming to the community.

We wish we could say we missed seeing you in 2020 – really, we do – but with a calendar that included more than 30 events, we’re pretty sure we saw you as often as ever.

When our programming went virtual in March, our team launched a pair of new event series: Breakfast With Halcyon and Virtual Studio Visit. Between the two, over two dozen Halcyon fellows were spotlighted for their work and their expertise in areas ranging from criminal justice, to health care, to accessibility.

In April, Halcyon’s arts team organized Arts Community Day, a collaboration with over a dozen other D.C.-based arts organizations.

The production included a welcome from fellows around the Over 500 registered guests came and went over the course of the seven-hour Zoom marathon, a celebration of creativity and resilience in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic. Each half-hour session was hosted by a different organization, with everything from studio tours and artist talks to virtual meditations and sessions on art collecting. A playlist of all thirteen segments from Arts Community Day is available.

On October 1, fellows and community members from six continents joined us for a virtual celebration of Halcyon’s fellows, past and present – our first ever Halcyon Homecoming!

The production included a welcome from fellows around the world, remarks from our founders, stories of impact local to D.C., and even a throwback to the very first cohorts of social entrepreneur and artists fellows.

You power the world forward.

Thank you, Halcyon community, for your dedication to our work this year. You have invested in building a more equitable, safe, and joyful world. Through your contributions, sponsorships, mentorship and advisory, you continue to sustain our global impact and strengthen our haven for future Halcyon fellows.

Our fellows have touched over two million lives, created nearly two thousand jobs, and have secured more than $124 million in further investments. Our artists have worked for over 8,500 hours in our studios and with over 108 community partners. Halcyon fellows continue to tackle the world’s greatest challenges with community-oriented solutions, and our work is critical in providing space, access, and community to these creatives, and a launchpad for their great successes. Your support has helped us change the trajectory of our fellows’ lives, and therefore the world, and we are grateful for you.
