Halcyon 2019 Annual Report

A Letter from Kate

Kate Goodall

When writing an annual report, it is customary to ignore the fact that the report is written in the year that follows. In other words, as I write about 2019, it would be most common to ignore that it’s now 2020, and the world has changed in pivotal ways.

I cannot reflect on 2019, though, without realizing our greatest achievement was how the year positioned us to sustain our best work in the face of challenges we couldn’t have known were coming. The fellows we supported in 2019, the dialogues we advanced, and the events we created— all served to build a stronger community, to make space for those moving the needle on health, climate issues, and racial injustice, and to cement our conviction that business and art can be essential powers for good. Because of 2019, we entered 2020 with the energy to embrace change, the ability to hope, and the confidence that we were doing the right work.

In 2019 we welcomed Incubator fellows who knew us by our increasingly global roster of alumni, Arts Lab fellows who’d seen the work of previous fellows at exhibitions, and speakers ready to engage with a Halcyon audience they knew to be thoughtful and inquisitive. In other words, our reputation preceded us. Kind, passionate and driven entrepreneurs, artists, investors, and so many others came to Halcyon hoping to find a like minded community and were not disappointed.

We leveraged that springboard to reach new heights. Capitalizing on the success of our inaugural By The People festival in 2018, we were able to secure artwork by Kahlil Joseph direct from the Venice Biennale, and collaborate with For Freedoms Founder Hank Willis Thomas to float his artwork up and down the Potomac and Anacostia Rivers. Full house Halcyon Incubator events and a spectacular Halcyon Awards in 2018 gave speakers and awardees confidence that we could draw a crowd, helping us secure visits from the likes of Sally Krawcheck, Trombone Shorty, and Senator Barbara Boxer.

Who knew that strength of reputation and confidence in mission would become such a powerful necessity in 2020? I stand here grateful for all that we built and honed in 2019, a year that laid the groundwork for stability in the face of the uncertainty to come.

Halcyon Incubator

Halcyon Incubator has a longstanding commitment to positioning entrepreneurs to dig deep and, with the help of a robust support system made up of industry leaders and experts, hone in on what makes their work an integral part of this changing world. By providing the things that founders often grasp for in their early months and years – housing, a living stipend, workspace, and personalized leadership and business coaching over the course of 18 months – our fellows are able to focus and fully explore the needs and growth points of their developing ventures. As we often say, it’s the gift of space, community, and access.

The 2019 Halcyon Incubator fellows showed us that with our support and their own dedication, in a few months products could go from taped-together cardboard mock-ups to first round prototypes garnering interest from local and global communities alike. With an impact that touched five continents and fellows once again gracing the pages of Forbes 30 Under 30, this group proved that the Halcyon Incubator in 2019 remains an unmatched ecosystem for advancing early-stage social impact ventures. Part of continuing that trend is educating ourselves and our community on what exactly a social impact focused ecosystem should look like. Building off of our work in 2017 and 2018, we released the third volume of the Social Enterprise Ecosystem Report and continued to position our incubator as evidence-based, tailored, and resourceful.

Halcyon Arts Lab

Halcyon Arts Lab is a residential fellowship designed to create space and support for artists who choose to use their work to facilitate social change on both a local and global scale. Our fellows use their studio space, living accommodations, materials stipends, and access to leaders in both art and industry as a focus for their visions of civic engagement and creativity. And our fellows are making waves – thanks in large part to their innovative work, Halcyon Arts Lab has emerged as a leading voice in the DC arts community – encouraging many to revisit their narrative around art in the nation’s capital, daring to envision a more impact-oriented landscape.

Community partnerships remain at the forefront of our fellows’ work, and have opened the door to a wide array of public-facing programming including hands-on workshops and lunches to introduce our community to newly appointed curators and other influential members of the creative community. Each of these opportunities allows us to enrich the environment of our Halcyon Arts Lab fellows and give fodder to the ever-evolving practices they explore during their time with us. Halcyon Arts Lab Cohort 3 leaned into that spirit of evolution and iteration, using their residency to explore completely different sides of their work and push themselves to expand what it meant to be practicing artists dedicated to social impact.

By The People

The 2019 By The People Festival was free a city-wide arts and dialogue extravaganza, expanding on the inaugural 2018 festival in ways we could never have imagined. Following the blueprint from our first year, we planted our feet and stretched wide so that every part of DC was home to thought provoking installations, eye-catching exhibitions, and tantalizing performances over the course of a longer nine-day event, with every single event completely free to attend. All four quadrants of DC housed large scale pieces like BLKNWS, a conceptual-journalism work from Kahlil Joseph, and a multi-ton barge floating on the Potomac and Anacostia Rivers with a message of unity from For Freedoms Founder Hank Willis Thomas.

“The 2019 By The People Festival was a free city-wide arts and dialogue extravaganza, expanding on the inaugural 2018 festival in ways we could never have imagined.”

If that wasn’t enough for our 38,000 visitors, over a dozen partners across the city presented their own programming in association with the festival or gave space to the impact-oriented works of our Halcyon Arts Lab Cohort 2 fellows. With 47 U.S. states represented among the festival attendees, we made sure the voices and talents of local artists had a spot front and center. Through a partnership with Monochrome Collective, we hosted the By The People x Monochrome Collective Art Fair, featuring the work of 50+ local DMV artists, all for sale to the public. The brick and mortar gallery space was an exciting curation of large and small, sculpture and pen and ink, deftly telling the stories of the artists and creators who call our city home.

Thought Leadership

Fast Forward

Halcyon’s Fast Forward event series features visionary women leaders in conversation with one another about the future of their industries. Hosted by Marla Beck, CEO and Co-Founder of BlueMercury, the 2019 Fast Forward events kicked off with a conversation with EDENS CEO Jodi McLean. Over the rest of the year, crowds turned out for inspiring, honest dialogue with and advance from Jean Case, CEO of The Case Foundation, Alexa Von Tobel, Founder and Managing Partner of Inspired Capital, and Julie Smolyanksy, President and CEO of Lifeway Foods.

Social Enterprise Ecosystem Report (SEER)

In October, Halcyon released the third volume of the Social Enterprise Ecosystem Report, a signature research asset that helps our Incubator understand impact-driven business across the country. The report is made up of survey data from hundreds of social entrepreneurs, as well as publicly available data used to rank the top cities in the U.S. based on four categories: funding, human capital, quality of life, and support systems.

The three volumes of the report tell the story of social enterprise as an increasingly mainstream part of the business world. They incorporate founders’ own words around the resources they have access to (or don’t), the communities they live in, and the policies surrounding social enterprise in their city or state. Thanks to expert insights from Halcyon and our partners, this year’s report provides valuable context for understanding the social enterprise ecosystem.

Halcyon Dialogue

For our final dialogue before moving on from this program, Halcyon challenged experts to envision a framework for responsible technology – a sort of constitution companies could agree to, thereby ensuring an ethical approach to everything from privacy issues and data management to artificial intelligence. We’re honored that they named their publication the “Halcyon Principles,” and that the connections built through the dialogue have led to lasting conversations among its participants, who continue to champion the framework they built.

Halcyon awards

The Halcyon Awards honor luminaries dedicating their lives to effecting positive social change in the arts, business, and policy. The 2019 Halcyon Awards were held at the Entertainment and Sports Arena in SE Washington, DC, home of the 2019 WNBA Champion Washington Mystics. The venue was the perfect backdrop for this year’s dedicated and accomplished awardees, who were celebrated by a crowd of 500 attendees decked out in “sneakers and suits.”

Troy “Trombone Shorty” Andrews

Troy “Trombone Shorty” Andrews

Arts Icon Award

Spotlighting an icon of artistic & social impact

Off-stage, talented musician Troy Andrews is the co-founder of the Trombone Shorty Foundation, an organization dedicated to preserving and perpetuating New Orleans music and culture by inspiring and teaching the next generation of New Orleans musicians. Halcyon chose Troy as the recipient of this year’s Arts Icon Award because we see the same strong commitment to community in him that we see in the fellows we support, the artists we work with for By The People, and the many partners who support Halcyon’s work.

Barbara Boxer

Barbara Boxer

Policy Visionary Award

Celebrating innovators in public policy

Former Senator Barbara Boxer’s commitment to public service and activism did not end when she retired from the Senate two years ago, and because of that Halcyon could not think of a more deserving recipient of the Policy Visionary Award. Her ongoing commitment to the causes she cares about will inspire our fellows to be equally persevering as we and they continue to benefit from Senator Boxer’s experience and wisdom.

Seth Goldman

Seth Goldman

Business Luminary Award

Honoring a global pioneer in social enterprise

Seth Goldman, Co-Founder & TeaEO Emeritus of Honest Tea and Executive Chair of Beyond Meat, is already a part of the Halcyon family, serving as a member of the advisory committee for Halcyon Incubator. We chose to give him the Business Luminary Award because he is emblematic of two of Halcyon’s most cherished values: risk-tolerance – essential to the entrepreneur’s journey – and humility – proven through dedication to mentoring and advising others along the way.
